Consumer unit upgrades

A new board with RCD protection to the current regulations — the upgrade most older Maltese homes need first.

Malta's regulations say what a domestic intake must have after the meter: a linked double-pole main breaker, an overvoltage device, and a 30 mA RCD, with an independent earth electrode of at least 16 mm² copper. Older boards have some of that, or none. Since the 2024 amendments the RCD also has to be of the appropriate type — a Type AC unit does not see the DC-offset leakage that inverter air-conditioning and modern appliances produce, which is one reason old boards trip for no visible reason.

A board change is a half-day job that ends with a test of every circuit. It is the point at which an electrician finds out what the rest of the installation is like, so we tell you before we start what a condemned circuit would cost to put right.

What this covers

What it costs

Published Maltese guides put a board upgrade at €300 to €800 depending on the number of circuits and what the test finds. The band below is the calculator's.

A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.

How it works

You deal with us, not with the trade. We visit, we quote a fixed price, we bring in a REWS-authorised electrician from the CheckYourTraders-verified network, and we stand behind the work. One point of contact, one contract, one invoice — and a certificate at the end.

Questions people ask

Is an overvoltage device compulsory?
Yes. Regulation 20 of S.L. 545.24 requires one after the main breaker on every supply up to 60 A per phase, and Enemalta expects it for any claim about supply faults.
My board is in the common parts of the block — can you change it?
The intake in a block is often a shared 100 mA device near the meters with a 30 mA RCD per apartment. Your own unit can be changed; anything on the common side needs the condominium's agreement first.
