EV charger installation

A dedicated circuit, the right RCD, and the Enemalta EV meter that unlocks the off-peak tariff.

A home charger is a dedicated final circuit sized without diversity, one charger per circuit, on an RCD that can see DC leakage — Type A with a DC-detecting device, or Type B. That is the regulator's guidance since the 2024 amendments and it is what an Authorisation A or B electrician installs. On a 40 A single-phase supply a 7 kW charger is most of the house; if you charge while the oven and the air conditioning run, the site visit will tell you whether three-phase is the honest answer.

The tariff is the other half. Enemalta fits a separate EV meter beside the main one — €50 single-phase, €80 three-phase — and charging through it costs €0.1298 per unit off-peak (midnight to 6am, noon to 4pm, and all day Sunday). There is no home-charger grant in 2026; the vehicle grants are separate.

What this covers

What it costs

We do not publish an installed price for the circuit: it depends on the run, the board and the supply, and no Maltese guide publishes one either. What is published is the hardware — a Wallbox Pulsar Plus at €699 and Würth wallboxes at €990 to €1,090 from Maltese suppliers — and Enemalta's EV meter at €50 or €80.

A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.

How it works

You deal with us, not with the trade. We visit, we quote a fixed price, we bring in a REWS-authorised electrician from the CheckYourTraders-verified network, and we stand behind the work. One point of contact, one contract, one invoice — and a certificate at the end.

Questions people ask

Do I need permission to install a charger?
Not from REWS — private charging points on private property need no authorisation. You apply to ARMS for the EV meter, and Enemalta installs it, one per account.
Can I charge from an ordinary socket?
Mode 2 charging from a 13 A socket is allowed only from a socket marked for EV use; it is slow and it loads a general circuit for hours. A dedicated circuit is the proper answer.
